Maintaining Your Fitness Routine Through the Holiday Season
Between travel, gatherings, and a calendar that changes from one week to the next, the holiday season can pull a routine in several directions. Training can be one of the first things to move when plans fill up, and a few missed weeks can make it harder to start again in January. A routine does not have to look the same in December as it did in October to stay in place.
In this post, we will cover why routines can be hard to maintain during the holidays, how to set a goal for the season that you can keep, and how shorter sessions fit into a full week. We will also look at planning around travel and gatherings, getting back on track after a missed week, and how personal training at Live Oak Fitness in Decatur can support you along the way.
Why Routines Get Harder to Keep During the Holidays.
Time is only part of it. Holiday weeks bring travel, visitors, school breaks, and extra commitments, so the open stretches you could count on in the fall are harder to find. A plan built for a predictable week can fall apart when no two days look alike.
Energy plays a part too. Late nights, long drives, and a full schedule can leave you more tired by the time you would normally train. Shorter days add to it, and staying motivated as the days get shorter can feel challenging.
With a fuller schedule and less energy, it is understandable that it has been challenging to fit training in lately. Your plan can change along with the season.
Set a Holiday Goal You Can Keep
The holidays are not the best time to chase a personal best. A more realistic goal is to keep your routine going, so that you start January with something already in place.
Start by choosing the smallest number of sessions per week that still feels like showing up. For some people that might be two sessions a week, and for others it might be one. The right number is the one you can keep on your busiest week.
Decide on it ahead of time, while the calendar still has room. Once the number is set, there is one less decision to make when the week gets crowded.
A goal like this also gives you a clear way to see how the season is going. If you kept your minimum, you did what you set out to do. That counts as progress even if some sessions were shorter than usual.
Shorter Sessions Still Count
Keeping a routine going does not have to take a full hour. Our private personal training sessions come in two lengths, and the 30-minute session is a complete session. It begins with a warm up, moves into a personalized 25-minute workout, and ends with 5 minutes of flexibility training. A 60-minute session follows the same structure with more time for the workout and flexibility training, and both include a review of your upcoming health and wellness goals.
During a week full of travel or visitors, the 30-minute session may be the one that fits best. On a calmer week, the 60-minute session gives you more time. Pick the length you can fit into your week, and treat it as a way to keep moving forward.
If a friend or partner wants to train with you, dual training is available.
Planning Around Travel and Gatherings
Holiday weeks go more smoothly when you plan ahead. Write down the days that will be taken up by travel, family events, or visitors, then place your sessions around them first. Appointments you set early are easier to protect than ones you try to squeeze in once the week is already full.
A few other habits help:
- Tell the people around you when your sessions are, so they know that you are planning around them.
- Choose a regular day and time when you can, since a set slot is easier to remember than one that changes every week.
- Keep preparation simple. Bottled water and towels are provided at private sessions, so there is less to pack.
- If your travel plans are not yet settled, call the studio to discuss scheduling.
Private Training or Group Classes for a Busy Season
Both formats are scheduled by appointment, and each works a little differently when your calendar is unpredictable. Private sessions are one-on-one, and our staff stays with you through the session, so the time is set between you and your trainer.
Group classes bring four to six people together in our private studio for 30- or 60-minute classes, and they run at three intensity levels. A lower-energy week can still fit a class, and training alongside others can be a source of encouragement when motivation is hard to find. Classes can be a single drop-in or a monthly plan, which gives you options if you are not sure how many weeks you can commit to. Because a class brings several people together, its time is less flexible than a one-on-one appointment.
The choice between private training and group classes comes down to two things: how predictable your weeks are, and whether training with others helps you show up.
If You Miss a Week
Even with good planning, some weeks will get away from you. A missed week can feel like a step backward, but the effort you put in earlier does not disappear. The next session is a fresh place to start, and there is no need to make up for lost time.
Tell your trainer why you missed. Travel, long drives, late nights, and a week of hosting can all affect how you feel in a session, and the plan can reflect that. Our staff can adjust the intensity to your fitness needs, making your return to the fitness center easier.
How Personal Training in Decatur Can Help During the Holidays
Every private session at our Decatur studio includes a review of your upcoming health and wellness goals. That gives you a regular place to plan for the season ahead, whether it means a lighter schedule, a trip, or a week full of guests. Our staff stays with you through each session, focused on your form and technique, so you are not working through a busy season alone.
Keeping a routine going through the holidays can also change how January feels. You start the new year already in the habit of showing up, and your plan can grow from there.
